Some ideas arrive in a flash. Others bubble away quietly, slowly changing shape, until one day you notice they’ve turned into something you can’t stop thinking about (even at 3am – when you should definitely be asleep!)
That’s what happened here.
Over the past three years, this ‘little’ idea has been patiently brewing in the background.
By 2025, ignoring it was like trying to tune out a flock of cockatoos screeching outside your window at 5am (not recommended).
Shifting gear
I’ve been thinking a lot about how Gumnut Trails can make a bigger impact.
How can we help turn any day outside into an adventure, no matter where you are?
How can we help more kids (and adults) get genuinely excited about exploring our incredible natural spaces — and maybe learn a little (or a lot) along the way?
And… how can we make something that works for nearly every occasion — quiet days at home, holidays away, when friends drop in, birthday parties, camping trips, outdoor playgroups, kinders, school groups… you name it!
That ‘little’ idea
What if adventures could happen anywhere — the beach, the bush, or the backyard?
So began the creation of the Anywhere Adventure Guides — a series of 3 pocket sized packs you will take everywhere - filled with real‑world (achievable) mini missions, games, story-led illustrations, and a healthy dose of Gumnut Trails magic.
Whether your “wilderness” is a patch of grass at the local park or a full‑blown camping trip, these guides are designed to meet you there — and make it memorable.
Up next (Chapter 2): Taking shape.
That was the spark. Next comes the work — months of writing, sketching, mini‑meltdowns, peer reviews (Australia wide), and field‑tests involving copious snacks (bribes), and one very enthusiastic assistant (aged 6).
