It's confession time in A Makers Tale

It's confession time in A Makers Tale

My family has another favourite hobby.

In our house, we have a special cupboard that is filled to the brim with board games!

You won't find Monopoly or Uno in this cupboard - instead - it's overflowing with both adult and family games that are strategic, thematic, puzzly, and fun!

We love playing board games and card games so much we finally thought...

Surely, we can make one too?

And that's exactly what we've been secretly doing for the last 9 months.

So how do you design a game!?

Let's be upfront here - we are not professional game designers (yet).

HOWEVER, we know what separates good and GREAT games....and we love a challenge.

The last 9 months have been intense. We have gone deep into the art of game designing,

  • the process,
  • the pitfalls,
  • the mechanics,
  • the balance of luck vs skill,
  • the emotional rollercoaster of playtesting...

While painting my 3 new Guides - I listened to HOURS of BG Design Lab podcasts, and we followed the 10 steps to game design by Stonemaier Games.

It hasn't been easy - and for a long time, we didn't know whether we would ever share this story.

However. 9 months later, we are sitting here with a game that is unique, brilliant for families (adults love it too), and is now passing playtesting with flying colours.

So maybe... we have a winner?

Up next (chapter 4) The day they broke the game...

The last 9 months have not been plain sailing - and in chapter 4 we deep dive into the game design and testing ups and downs of creating our game.

So, the next time you sit down to play a favourite game - ask yourself this ONE question.

Why do I love it?

Think like a designer and see what you come up with!

You never know - maybe one day you will design a game too?
